Lecture: The Business Models of Streaming Data: From Service to Science Speaker:Dr. Boyi Li Time: 10:30, 8th Jul. 2016 Place: Building 25A-3B Bio: Dr. Boyi Li is a Lecturer in Management at the University of Exeter Business School. He joined the Business School in September 2014. He holds a PhD from LSE (Department of Management), a bachelor degree from Renmin University of China, and two master degrees (MSc, MSc Research) in information systems and organizational studies from LSE. Dr. Li is broadly interested in digital innovations in the context of developing countries (ICT4D). What characterizes all his research projects is the use of social theories, in particular the theories of political economy, to study how the practices of innovation and development can be explained by the contextual institutional structures and local knowledge. His recent interest focuses on the concept of “digital materiality”, and interpretive schemes of actors (context) in using large sets of computational data for strategic/entrepreneurial purposes. His papers have been published in the top IS journals (e.g., ISJ, EJISDC) and conferences (e.g., ICIS, IFIP). At present, Dr. Li is co-leading a special issue in Asian Business & Management journal (ABS Level 2, SSCI) that is in Call For Pape stage. Abstract: The seminar seeks to explain the emerging business models that are driven by real-time online data and data analytics in the internet age. It provides a way of thinking and crafting strategy that transforms digital opportunities into sustainable competitive advantages. The seminar also discusses the critical theories and concepts to analyze and differentiate the strategic values of emerging technologies (cloud computing, social media, big data, the internet of things etc.), and evaluate different methods of aligning technological opportunities with business strategy. By examining the business models and strategies of a wide range of internet business, the seminar identifies the patterns and explaining the mechanisms by which digital business evolves, but also, more importantly, critically evaluating the strategic choices to effectively convert digital opportunities into competitiveness | |
